Mandla Mandela‚ Nelson Mandela’s oldest grandchild‚ and his wife Rabia Mandela welcomed their first born child Friday morning.

We are thrilled to announce the birth of our first baby in Cape Town today. The name will be revealed following a traditional naming ceremony in the next week or two‚’’ a statement released by the family read.

In a post on his Instagram Mandla thanked the medical team who helped deliver his child‚ saying both his wife and child were in “excellent health.” Additionally he expressed his excitement as a new father.

“We cannot wait to introduce our child to the people of Mvezo Khomkhulu.”

Mandla used Instagram previously in early February to announce the upcoming birth.

The original post was of two positive home pregnancy tests with the caption “ALHAMDULILLAH‚” a phrase used in Islam to express praise to God. The announcement came shortly after the couple’s first wedding anniversary.

This is Mandla’s fourth marriage. He remains legally married to his first wife‚ Tando Mabunu-Mandela‚ but both are estranged and remain in court battles.
