Police said the claims form part of a wider corruption scandal, uncovered in 2013, in which the government allegedly siphoned millions of dollars from state coffers.

Malawi issued a warrant of arrest for the former president, Joyce Banda, over alleged abuse of office and money laundering allegations.

They said they unearthed credible evidence against Banda.Her spokesperson denied any wrongdoing.

Banda left the country after she lost the elections to Peter Mutharika.She has not returned since 2014.
