Gauteng vehicle testing centre officials in court for corruption

Government is cracking down on corruption at vehicle testing centres.

Two Gauteng Community Safety Department officials will appear in the Johannesburg Commercial Court on Monday on charges of corruption.

The female transport compliance officers, aged 41 and 36, were arrested at Langlaagte Vehicle Testing Centre on Friday after allegedly accepting a R9 000 bribe from a scholar transport operator who required a road worthy certificate.

A third suspect is expected to be arrested on Monday.

The arrests were conducted jointly by the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the Gauteng inspectorate.

The officers arrested could face 15 years in prison if found guilty.

The Langlaagte testing station was prioritised by law enforcement following numerous complaints from the public about corruption and bribery.

Investigations continue in other provinces and more arrests are pending.

Members of the public were urged to report corruption and bribery involving testing stations and traffic officials.
