President Jacob Zuma says more needs to be done to stop violence against women and children

President Jacob Zuma says more needs to be done to stop violence against women and children.

He was speaking at a ceremony commemorating chief Albert Luthuli’s death.

“It is equally apt to invoke the spirit of Tambo since he would be turning 100 years this year, while we have made considerable progress Luthuli would have been pained over the high levels of violent crime against women and children we will keep working to rule out this scourge,” said Zuma.

Zuma said leaders should honour the late ANC leader Chief Albert Luthuli, by recommitting themselves to fighting poverty, unemployment and inequality.

He was speaking at the 50th anniversary of Luthuli’s death, who died in a suspicious train accident.

The official report is that he was run over by a train, the report remains unconvincing to this day. Given the brutality of the racist apartheid regime and its attitude to the leaders of the mass democratic movement, his death will continue to be shrouded in suspicion,” said Zuma.

Luthuli’s gravesite has been declared a National Heritage Site. He has also been also lauded for being a champion of gender equality.
