The horrific accident happened on the R550 interchange between Heidel- berg and Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni.

THREE motorists were burned to death and four others were rushed to hospital after a pile-up on the N3 north on Tuesday.

Six articulating trucks and 11 cars crashed into each other, which led to three trucks, two bakkies and three sedans catching fire. Two occupants of a bakkie as well as one person in an articulated truck were trapped in their vehicles and burned to death.

Rescue teams from Heidelberg and Ekurhuleni emergency services battled the fires.

They used specialised rescue tools to recover the dead from the wrecks.

The highway was closed to traffic in both directions during the rescue operations.

Motorists were diverted to the R103 road as an alternative.

Earlier reports revealed that smoke from burning grass was blowing across the highway before the accident, which made it difficult for motorists to see.

The police accident units were investigating the incident.

Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesman William Ntladi told Daily Sun: “We have recovered two people from one vehicle that was burned beyond recognition after the car caught fire in the pile-up.”
